the '05 Hoiliday card.

This is a tradition of sorts that I've kept over the past 6 years. Every year I hand make a small run of cards and try something new each year. ( these cards go mostly to family and a few close friends.) This year I tried to focus more on color and painting ,and less on a line drawing. For those who check in on this blog from time to time, Happy Holidays.

Anatomy of a birthday card..

In most animation studios people have birthdays, and on these birthdays some people get a birthday card made for
that person. If you've read my previous post on bad cards you know I like the challenge of the quick turn-a-round
from concept to finish and I have to say it's all about the completion. This post I will show the steps from test to completion.

So here's the sketch, this is usually the longest part of the process. A couple of thumbnails and the a working layout.

Then, in this case I painted a test because it is water-proof ink and I want to get an idea of a finish.

Once the test is done and I kind of know where I stand, I paint the sucker and move on to the final stage..

I then scan the painting and mess around in photoshop to age an place in a proper 40's style layout. In the end it's not perfect but it was good to finish something.

This has been one of the busiest summers ever for me and I can't tell you how hard it's been to post anything.
now the time has come and I've been working and playing with gouache and watercolors and no I don't mean a new brush or
transparency setting in photoshop even though I use photoshop everyday but I came to a conclusion where it's became too
disposable I didn't feel like I was growing as an artist. Some of the best learning happens when we make a big mistake especially in real media. Anyways, digital and real influence eachother and right now I'm all about the real..Here is a quick
watercolor with the sketch.

As the con approaches I find myself with alot to do in order to be ready for San Diego, Of all the stuff I have to do, one of the things I enjoy doing most are pinups for friends. Taking other peoples characters and putting your take on it is very
enjoyable. This pinup is for Ted Mathot storyboard badass, He'll have part 1 of a 2 book story that involves two sister's
who are not to be messed with.(and unlike my pinup are grown up) If you see it, Pick it up, you won't be sorry.

Here is a promo poster I printed up for my short story in a anthology called "AFTERWORKS", it will also serve as the title page.
Below are a couple of ruff pages from the story.( they are not in seq. order, just 2 random pages that actually look like something.)

I'l probably post the inbetween and finished pages some time in the next 2 weeks, seeing as my deadline for the printers is next friday
and I have to tie down the values so I can turn it in..

He is going to be selling this new 200+ page book Colossus at the San Diego Comic Con and I suggest you
try and pick it up, It's quite a good read and he's no sloutch on the visuals.

Here is the new homepage, it took some time to redo this site because of the distractions leading up to the last couple of weeks. You see, the earlier part of this year was spent getting a sketchbook to the printers and getting ready to sell it at APE.( Alternative Press Expo) How was I to know how much of a pain it would be, I shared a table with good friend Sanjay Patel selling his new book:Little India. That book was a smash hit selling 100+ copies at Ape and selling out of the original 500 print run via email
in the first week after the expo. He has now since ordered more copies to print for the SD Comic Con.
meanwhile, I had a great time at Ape as well and my absolute highlight was meeting 2 of the 3
Hernandez brothers,Gilbert and Mario.

It was this weekend and the lull before the work I have to put in on getting ready for the SD Comic Con that prompted me to redo or "update my site with the projects I plan on coming out in the coming year(s). On the SD Comic Con side of things, A few friends and I are going to have 2 tables and approx. 5 new books for sale. I will post more info as the Con rolls closer.

My goal for this little blog is to share some hidden talent and a drawing or 2 with the masses.

I get asked from time to time to draw a brithday card for someone in the office,( a animation studio tradtion)
and usually I 'm more than happy to do it. You see I get the chance to break a bad habit I have, second guessing myself.
I use these rules so I can streamline my thought process.
1. spend no more than 2 hrs on it.
2. try things you may not be comfortable with. (style/approach-wise)
Those rules help me let go and see where I land.
